Nokia Gives a Sneak Peek at the Next Version of Symbian

The Symbian Foundation is in the process of transforming the Symbian OS. Nokia has given the world its first glimpse of what the user interface for next version of this operating system is going to look like.

Symbian OS 3

Symbian is in the process of a major transition. Until now, it has provided the back-end software to run phones, and a variety of user interfaces were then layered on top, like S60, S40, UIQ, etc. That's changing, and next version will have its own user interface, drawn from the current ones.

Version 3 is expected to debut next year, but Nokia started showing it off this week.

What's New?
Symbian^3 will clearly show its evolution from S60, but there are changes. The most noticeable of these is support for addition homepages which the user can scroll through with a flick of their finger. These will hold the links and widgets the user has chosen.

Some changes are less obvious. Nokia promises it will support the capacitive touchscreens that are rapidly replacing resistive ones, for example, and multi-touch is also being added.

In addition, a great deal of work is going into simplifying the user interface, making Symbian^3 easier for new users to learn.

Nokia's Role
Nokia is the largest user of the Symbian OS, and a majority of the phones it makes run this operating system.

Still, other companies use it too -- like Ericsson -- and so the theoretically independent Symbian Foundation handles development.

Nokia N97 Review

The new Nokia N97 smart phone is one of the priciest mobile devices out there. It is so powerful that Nokia is not simply referring to it as a cell phone - or even a smart phone. No, they have deemed this new device to be a “mobile computer”. It’s packed with many advanced gadgets that James Bond himself would be happy to have, but despite the powerhouse of features, this phone isn’t marketed as an “amazing touchscreen device” (though the touchscreen does work just fine).

It seems that touchscreen smart phones are the current trend right now. Ever since Apple, the trend setters of technology, came out with the iPhone, almost every single mainstream phone has had a direct knock-off of Apple’s design. Well, Nokia most definitely isn’t jumping on this bandwagon. Though their phone does pack many of the same features as the iPhone, and does incorporate a touchscreen, it also has a full pull-out QWERTY keyboard, and is not taking on the same marketing method that its competitors are.

The Nokia N97 is simply the newest phone in their line of products based on the S60 platform. The 3.5 inch touchscreen display offers digital real estate never before seen on a cell phone. The resolution is 640 by 360 pixels, which is close to the resolution many full sized desktop computers were offering 10 years ago. This makes web browsing with its built-in, unrestricted web browser a breeze. Integrated social networking utilities update your MySpace and Facebook information right from the main page.

Nokia N97

You’re not restricted to simply viewing mobile websites. The fully functional integrated web browser can view practically any website that a desktop computer could, since it IS the same type of browser used on full sized computers. The Nokia N97 has so much power that it can render sites and individual pages quicker than any other smart phone. Combine this with 3G connectivity, and you have pretty much died and gone to heaven.

A full web browser isn’t the only notable software the Nokia N97 comes with. Nokia Maps is included as well, which gives you access to national and local maps whenever you need them. The Nokia N97 also has a widgets system with many applications to choose from.

The Nokia N97 is not unusually large, small, or out of the ordinary in the way of dimensions. As a phone with a sliding keyboard, it is a little thicker than phones that do not have a physical keyboard - but it is directly comparable to the thickness of phones of the same type. It is just under 16 mm thick for the most part, to give you an idea of how this phone would feel in your pocket. In addition to this thickness, the camera area will jut out another 2 mm or so. In your hand, the phone feels very well balanced, and does not seem too large or small in any way. While it may not be the most comfortable phone to carry around in your pocket all day due to the thickness, that is about the only gripe one could come up with as far as size is concerned.

The target market for this phone is definitely the younger crowd who want a modern, powerful phone but prefer features and capability to trendiness and brand name wow-factor. Due to the unique powerful characteristics and the sky-high asking price, anyone who buys this phones has to be into gadgets, phones, or simply be someone who loves having the latest and greatest.

Now that we have covered some of the best details about the Nokia N97, it’s time to take a look at what you’ve all been waiting for. The Apple iPhone is the current undisputed king-of-the-hill when it comes to smart phones, and every phone of this kind has been compared to it at one point or another.

Let’s start off with first impressions. At first glance, the phones are physically pretty similar. The iPhone has a more recognizable design, but not necessarily a better looking one. The Nokia N97 looks sleek and powerful, and has that real “super-powerful gadget feel”.

Speaking of super powers, let’s discuss price that soars sky-high. This is where the iPhone will immediately take the lead. The Nokia N97 is perhaps the most expensive mainstream smart phone available, with a tag of around $700 without a contract discount. Even with a contract price, the total only drops a little bit, leaving it hundreds of dollars behind the iPhone’s reasonable rate.

The next category is where the Nokia N97 jumps ahead: Physical features. The iPhone comes in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB models, and does not offer a slot for memory cards. The Nokia N97, on the other hand, does stay true to it’s name of a “mobile computer”. The internal memory is 32GB, and that comes standard on the phone - there is no sub-model that offers less storage. In addition to the internal space, expandable memory card slots can hold data cards of up to 16GB in size, to store music, photos, or videos. That’s a total storage limit of 48GB, which blows any other device clean out of the water.

Another technical advantage the Nokia N97 has over the iPhone is the ability to display Flash files and the Flash-based videos that power sites such as YouTube. This is one of the iPhone’s biggest weaknesses. While it can play YouTube videos using its integrated player, no other flash files can be used.

Internally, the Nokia N97 has build in Bluetooth connectivity, which the iPhone lacks. It also comes with a built in GPS system, which only newer versions of the iPhone are equipped with. They both have built in wi-fi for high-speed use at home or any hot-spot. Overall, the Nokia N97 is a more powerful than the iPhone - but the price tag is nearly three times as much when comparing post-service contract pricing.

It is hard to give a complete review without the phone being officially released yet. So far, it looks to be a promising alternative to many of the mainstream phones - just so long as you have a pocketbook thick enough to absorb all the dollar signs.

Nokia 6350 Review

The Nokia 6350 is the second Nokia handset that AT&T has offered this autumn season. Its feature set is similar to the carrier's Nokia Mural, though it offers a sleeker design. If you're a Nokia fan, it has everything you need for basic communication, but it's not our choice for a multimedia handset. Call quality is decent, though, and the price is affordable.

Design
The 6350 doesn't go out of its way to impress, but it has an attractive design. We like the slim profile, smooth lines, and the soft touch material that covers most of the front and back covers. When open, it forms a smooth arc like most of the Nokia's recent U.S. models. At 3.67 inches by 1.86 inches by 0.68 inch and 3.62 ounces, the 6350 is portable, but it has a comfortable, solid feel in the hand. The 6350 comes in graphite (gray) and red, but the features are the same on both models. According to Nokia, the 6350 is free of harmful materials and 80 percent of its parts can be recycled.

The 6350's external display is only 1.36 inches, but with support for 262,244 colors (160x128 pixels) it's quite sharp for its size. It shows the date, time, battery life, signal strength, and photo caller ID. It also works as a viewfinder for the external display. Above the display is the camera lens, while below are the dedicated music controls--you can use them to activate the music player without opening the phone. On the downside, the keys are a bit small and you'll need to press them firmly.

Nokia describes the dedicated music controls as 'discrete.' We think they're too small.

Completing the exterior of the phone are a volume rocker and a push-to-talk button on the left spine. The controls are tiny, but you can find the rocker by feel when you're on a call. Below them is a 2.5mm headset jack; we'd prefer a standard 3.5mm jack on a phone with a music player. The Micro-USB/charger port is on the phone's right spine and the microSD card slot is behind the battery cover.

The internal display measures 2 inches and supports a rich 16.7 million colors (320x240 pixels). With that resolution we'd expect bright, vibrant colors and sharp graphics, and the 6350 delivers. The Series 40, sixth-edition menu interface is easy to use, and you're offered a decent number of customization options. You can change the font size and home screen font color. You also can add shortcut icons to the home screen.

The navigation array is flush, but spacious. There's a four-way toggle with a central OK button, two soft keys, a shortcut for the browser and GPS feature, a camera shutter, and the Talk and End/power keys. That's a nice assortment, though we'd replace the browser and GPS shortcuts with a speakerphone key and a dedicated back button. You can personalize the toggle with shortcuts. The keypad buttons are also flat, but their spacious design makes dialing and texting easy. They numbers on the keys are large as well, and they have a bright backlighting.

Features
The 6350 has a 1,000-contact phone book with room in each entry for five phone numbers, two e-mails, a street address, a birthday, a formal name and nickname, a company name and job title, and notes. You can save callers to groups and pair them with one of 14 polyphonic ringtones and a photo or video. The SIM card holds an additional 250 contacts.

Essential features include a vibrate mode, a calendar, a to-do list, text and multimedia messaging, a notepad, a calculator, a timer, a stopwatch, and full duplex speakerphone. On the higher end you'll find speaker-independent voice dialing, instant messaging, a voice recorder, PC syncing, USB mass storage, and support for AT&T's push-to-talk network. You can use the 6350 as a modem and the Bluetooth 2.1 feature includes stereo and file transfer profiles. The handset also offers access to POP3 and IMAP4 e-mail through a Web-based interface, but you'll be typing your messages on the alphanumeric keypad.

Windows Live Messenger is now available via the Nokia Messaging Chat application straight from compatible phone's homescreens.
This first instalment of Windows Live Messenger for Nokia Messaging includes tabbed chat windows, the ability to call directly from the buddy list, and notifications of new messages that pop up while the application is in the background.
Features include an appear offline login option while grouped contacts, emoticons and sounds are also available.
The Nokia E72 is the first device that comes with support for Windows Live Messenger, but the Nokia E63, Nokia E71 and Nokia E75 are also good to go after a download of "Nokia Messaging for IM" from the Ovi Store.

Nokia Malaysia launches free charger exchange programme

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 NOVEMBER 2009 – Nokia Malaysia has launched a charger exchange programme, offering free replacements for certain Nokia-branded chargers manufactured by third-party suppliers.

A Nokia Malaysia representative said that during a routine quality control process, Nokia has identified a potential product quality issue with certain chargers manufactured by one of its third-party suppliers.

The plastic covers of the affected limited number of chargers could come loose and separate, exposing the charger’s internal components and potentially posing an electrical shock hazard if certain internal components are touched while the charger is plugged into a live socket, according to the Nokia representative.
Though Nokia is not aware of any incidents or injuries related to these chargers, it has offered to exchange, free of charge, certain model types manufactured by a single third-party supplier during a specific time period within the scope of the exchange programme.

The chargers are the AC-3E and AC-3U models, manufactured between 15 June 2009 and 9 August 2009; and the AC-4U model, manufactured between 13 April 2009 and 25 October 2009. As these are all two-pin chargers, none of the specific models of chargers included in this programme have been sold by Nokia for domestic use in Malaysia where domestic electrical outlets require a three-pin charger.

However, Nokia’s representative advised consumers to verify if their chargers are part of the exchange programme, if they have purchased the chargers from different sources.

For more information, including how consumers can check to see if their chargers are part of this exchange programme, Nokia has established a website. Consumers are asked to visit http://chargerexchange.nokia.com

Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is one of the most popular representatives of the music phones series from Nokia. What makes the 5310 XpressMusic to be special? It is a little phone, slim, feature-rich. Moreover, it has a good price. It is very suitable for those who need a medium mobile environment, an everyday phone, and who often listen to music on the phone.

The package, in which the Nokia 5310 comes, includes primarily the supplied charger and the user guide. In addition, we have a handsfree consists of two parts: one part with the remote and the jack, and a second part that is the headset itself. A big plus is the microUSB cable, used to connect the cell phone to your PC, along with the CD for the drivers and the software suite. Considering that the standard microUSB is not so widespread right now, we can say that Nokia has made the correct choice by providing the data cable in the standard package.

nokia-5310-expressmusic

This Nokia cell phone is ideal for listening to music and it can easily compete with Sony Ericsson phones in the Walkman series. We love the thin design and the lightweight, a good, practical keyboard and an attractive look (you can choose between red or blue). Nokia 5310 XpressMusic has a fully loaded music player and FM radio, up to 4 GB of memory for storing your music, a 2 megapixel camera and Bluetooth connectivity.

nokia-5310-expressmusic2

The battery life is below average and some users have reported a software problem, but nevertheless, Nokia 5310 XpressMusic deserves to be taken into account. Oh, yes! Nokia XpressMusic has evolved and Sony Ericsson would better watch out. Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is a music phone with a classic shape and it is available in a choice of red or blue. It is a thin phone, only 9.9 mm and has a beautiful and practical design with a conventional keyboard of the right size plus 5 navigation keys (Sony Ericsson take note!). There are three dedicated music keys placed on the edge of the 5310 XpressMusic phone screen and along the side of the phone, we find the volume keys. The oblique edge makes the cell phone easy to hold in the palm, and red or blue stripes are funky, but not extraordinary. We like the look, we like the feeling. Nokia XpressMusic is definitely one of the phones you can enjoy even when it is turned off, is small and quite easy enough to be worn anywhere in the pocket of your jeans, your shirt or your bag.

nokia-5310-expressmusic3

It is basically a music phone, and comes with a music player with all the features of a player and FM radio. This music player has support for playlists, albums, and an equalizer. You can listen to your music using built-in loudspeaker (which does not sound that good) or it is better to use the stereo headset that you received when buying the phone or an optional headset. Its quality is good, but for those who really want to enjoy the best sound, this 3.5 mm audio connector makes it possible to use other headphones and superior quality differences are obvious. Also, because of the A2DP support, you can listen to your favorite music using a Bluetooth wireless headset. We can not forget about the presence of the FM radio, which uses the same interface with the music player. RDS support is also present. Nokia 5310 XpressMusic has a new audio chip upgrade, and the quality of the sound is impeccable. Seriously, the music player is as easy to use as a Walkman phone from Sony Ericsson, or as a simple MP3 player. We like that it has a decent internal memory (30 MB), but you will definitely want to add a memory card to increase the storage space. Nokia 5310 supports microSD cards up to 4 GB.  A 4 GB memory card is enough to store about 1,000 songs. The memory cards are really cheap, so there is no reason not to try to reach the maximum available capacity of the phone.

However, 5310 XpressMusic is not just a music phone. This is just the most important feature. Besides the possibility of phone calls and listen to music, you do everything you expect from a mid-range mobile phone that has no 3G support. The camera has a 2 megapixels resolution. It lacks the flash, which is a shame, but if there is enough light it can take some good quality picture. The Nokia XpressMusic screen has an exceptional quality with a high resolution, as good as any other phone of this price range. Although Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is not a 3G phone it supports fast downloads using the EDGE technology and has a preinstalled internet browser (Opera Mini Browser), so you can surf the Internet, and the screen is big enough to make this possible. The Nokia XpressMusic comes with 3 games already installed and you can also download more Java games. It can even be personalized with animated screensavers, wallpapers and themes that can be downloaded into the phone from the internet or from your computer.

If there is a problem with the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic, that is the battery life. Nokia claims that the phone can remain in standby up to 300 hours - that means 12.5 days. Not true! You can use this phone approximately 1 or 2 days, depending on how often you use its various functions. Since Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is a music phone, perhaps you will use it very much and you will need to recharge it almost every day. Well you must get over it - it is a thin phone with a large LCD display and many features. The life of the battery is similar to any phone of this type. If it is important for you to have a phone with a longer battery life, then buy another phone (definitely not a thin one - maybe a SE W810i or a SE W910i). A number of users complained that the phone freezes or reboots itself. So something like that is unacceptable, and if it happens to you, take the phone back to the store. If it happens again, ask for another phone.

nokia-5310-expressmusic4

It is very clear that the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is a great mobile that includes all the needed features and meets the multimedia demands of a very broad class of users. The music player is up to the requirements for a dedicated phone in this segment, but the external speaker sound could it be something more powerful.

The device has a very good price-performance ratio, and a rich package of features. It could be better, but perhaps the price would have been different. Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is a phone that I can recommend to anyone.

nokia-5310-expressmusic5

It is distinguished by: music player quality, light weight (71 grams), slim design - only 9.9 mm thick, dedicated buttons for playback control, audio output 3.5 mm jack, A2DP profile support, FM radio stereo with RDS, microSD card slot (1GB or 2GB card included), a 16 million colors display with QVGA resolution, S40 interface - 5th edition.

Disappoints by: lack of 3G, video recording - at very low resolution, the operating speed of the camera is small, low autonomy compared with the announced, memory slot is under the shell.

Nokia N900 quick hands-on

We've finally had a chance to play around at length with a very late pre-production version of Nokia's N900 (retail units are already shipping, but not to our neck of the woods just yet) and we wanted to scribble out a few notes for you before taking delivery of a final build for a full review hopefully in the next week or two. Here are some highlights we've noticed so far:

  • Processor, processor, processor. Oh, and did we mention the processor? The N900's Cortex A8-based core yields significant improvements in day-to-day usability over the N810's ARM11 unit.
  • Though it's still quite raw and feature-incomplete, Maemo 5 is by far the most user-friendly version of the platform to date, if for no other reason than the fact that it's very pretty. Screen transitions are smooth and look great, the home screen is as attractive and versatile as any widget-based home screen on the market today, and the Expose-style task switcher is a welcome addition.
  • The N900 may very well offer the best browsing experience of any smartphone on the market today (yes, including the iPhone). What little ground it gives up in user friendliness is more than countered by the fact that you have the closest thing you can get to a desktop-class browser in a device of this size and form factor; it's straight-up Mozilla, after all, and everything renders faithfully. Flash doesn't blaze, but at least the Cortex A8 makes it usable.
Follow the break for more impressions and a quick rundown on video!
Gallery: Nokia N900 quick hands-on
  •
  • The hardware's a mixed bag. It doesn't feel cheap, per se -- but considering that this will become Nokia's highest-end smartphone, it doesn't necessarily feel the part, either. On the bright side, it's narrow enough to rest comfortably in the hand while using it as a phone, and it's not annoyingly thick -- don't get us wrong, it's a beefy phone, but not to the point of causing a problem in your pocket.
  • The keyboard is mediocre. The N900 doesn't seem to slide open as much as it could, which means that it's got a uniquely narrow three-row QWERTY keyboard; fortunately, Nokia did a great job of shaping the keys to give them about as much feel as possible. The spacebar and directional keys are strangely located, which might necessitate a learning curve for some users.
  • As we mentioned before, this is a pretty raw phone. Basic features like MMS and portrait mode aren't supported; MMS won't be a big deal for many users, but being forced to use the N900's non-phone functions in landscape is a pretty big deal.
  • The N900 may have a "good" resistive touchscreen, but it's still a resistive touchscreen, which means it's not going to be as finger-friendly as it could be -- we were repeatedly disappointed by how much pressure was required to actuate scrolling gestures in menus, for example. Thing is, the N900 is a device where we can see many (if not most) users still preferring to have access to a stylus from time to time for precision input, and that being said, this is probably about as good of a resistive display as Nokia is capable of manufacturing.
The bottom line? We'll hold back on final judgment until we use a review unit, but our initial swipe at this thing has us ready to drop a "for early adopters only" stamp on it -- for your average consumer just looking for an effective smartphone, it seems like it's got too many quirks and functionality holes to recommend.

Nokia E72 available now !

Only few hours after announcing the upcoming release of Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition, Nokia has also announced that the E72 is now in stores – although it didn’t say what stores exactly.

Nokia E72 official

Nokia E72 official back

As you can see, Nokia E72 is as slim as the E71. The smartphone will be available in late Q3 2009 (September?), for an estimated retail price of €350

Officially presented back in July (at the same time with the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic and Nokia 3710 fold), Nokia E72 is the Finnish company’s newest Eseries smartphone and it should, theoretically, replace the E71.

The new E72 is as thin as the E71 (10mm), but comes with better features, like HSDPA 10.2Mbps and HSUPA 2Mbps, 5MP autofocus camera, 3.5mm headset jack, 250MB of internal memory and a 600MHz ARM processor.

Other features include a 2.4 inch QVGA display, full QWERTY keypad, Wi-Fi, GPS, Nokia Maps and Nokia Messaging.
